Padrón (Town Registry)

What is the "padrón"?

Abaco Asesores: padronThe padrón is a register held at the Town Hall of people who are "habitually resident" in the municipality (a "habitual resident" being someone who lives legally in Spain for more than 6 months a year). Only "Residents", whether property owners or tenants, may be entered on the padrón – and, in fact, have an obligation to register.

As requirements and documents to be produced may vary between different areas, we recommend you check with your local Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) which documents they need you to produce. Once you have registered on the padrón, the Town Hall will issue you with a "Certificado de empadronamiento", which is proof of your new status.

Please note that in some areas you may need to be registered on the padrón before you can register for basic supplies and Services (eg National Health Care). Please check with your Town Hall.
